I led Margaret to a guest suite and told her she could stay as long as she wanted. She said she did not want to be a burden.

“You sold your farmland so I could attend college,” I reminded her. “You worked two jobs. You wore the same winter coat for nine years because tuition was due.”

She smiled faintly.

“You remember too much.”

“I remember everything.”

Then she said, “So do I.”

Before I could ask what she meant, the mansion alarm sounded.

Someone had entered with an authorized access code.

Only three people had private access: me, the property manager, and my late father’s attorney.
