My Parents Skipped Christmas at My New House Because “Your Sister Needs Groceries”—Then They Saw My Home on TV

PART 3

The special had ended nearly an hour ago.

“I figured you might.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

I leaned back against the couch.

“You weren’t coming for Christmas.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“No,” I said quietly. “It doesn’t.”

Mom exhaled.

“We didn’t know it was that house.”

“What house did you think it was?”

She didn’t answer.

I waited.

Finally she said, “We thought you were exaggerating.”

I frowned.

“About what?”

“Your business. The house. Everything.”

I looked around the room.

The fire had burned low.

Christmas lights reflected against the windows.

My friends were still laughing downstairs.
