My Son’s Barber Whispered, “Check Behind His Left Ear”—20 Minutes Later, Police Arrived

I swallowed.

“What did he say you had to do?”

“He said I had to remember a number.”

My heart began to race.

“What number?”

Ethan closed his eyes, concentrating.

“Fourteen. Twenty-seven. Six.”

I stared at him.

The handwritten papers from David’s toolbox had contained rows of numbers.

I hadn’t noticed the sequence.

14 — 27 — 6.

“Did you tell the man that number?”

“No.”

“Did he tell you to remember anything else?”

Ethan shook his head.

Then, very quietly, he said, “Mom, I think he knows I remember.”

Before I could respond, Detective Alvarez entered the room.

She held her phone in one hand.
