“Victoria Hale,” one officer said, handing her a legal document. “You are being served with a federal subpoena involving falsified records, financial misconduct, and conspiracy.”
Victoria’s polished mask shattered.
Grant stayed on his knees, staring at the children he had never known.
Then I looked toward the casket.
“Harrison knew.”
Grant’s head snapped up. “What?”
“Your father found the truth three years ago. He hired his own investigators after discovering Victoria was moving company funds offshore.”
I pulled the worn Christmas card from inside my jacket.
“He found out about the children. He wrote to my post office box at Fort Benning.”
Grant stared at the card.
“He wrote every month for two years,” I said. “He sent the children Christmas gifts. He helped create college trusts under his personal name, separate from Whitmore Enterprises.”
Grant’s face crumpled.
“He asked me to keep it quiet until after he passed because he wanted you to face the truth when there was no one left for you to hide behind.”
The sound that left Grant was not anger.
It was grief.
I turned to my children.
“Say goodbye to your grandfather.”
One by one, they stepped forward.
Evan laid a red rose on the casket. Noah followed. Then Liam. Ruby placed a hand-drawn card beside the flowers, and Emma added a small white daisy.
“Goodbye, Grandpa Harrison,” Ruby whispered.
I raised my hand to my service cap and gave Harrison Whitmore a final salute—the only man in that family who had honored the truth.
Then I turned away.
Grant stumbled after us.
“Savannah, please. Let me make this right. I’ll give you everything—the estate, the company, anything. Just let me be their father.”
I stopped at the SUV door.
“You don’t become a father because you finally see your face in theirs,” I said. “A father stays when things are hard. A father protects his children from lies instead of choosing the lie because it is convenient.”
“I’ll fight you in court.”
“You can try,” I said calmly. “But my evidence is flawless, your father secured their future, and Victoria left you with a corporate audit you cannot outrun.”
