PART 2
Late that night, we reached the townhouse I had purchased years before marrying Chad.
My key no longer worked.
The locks had been completely replaced.
I rang the bell several times before my mother, Lorraine, opened the door wearing an expensive new coat and diamond earrings I had never seen.
“Where is Toby?” I demanded immediately.
“He is fast asleep inside,” Lorraine replied coolly.
I tried to move past her, but she stepped firmly into the doorway and blocked me.
“This home no longer belongs to you, Genevieve.”
My knees weakened.
“Mom, Chad forged my signature to steal this place.”
Lorraine didn’t even bother denying it.
“You never knew how to appreciate what you had, always obsessed with your strict rules, financial calculations, and perfectionism. Chad actually thinks about the future.”
“How could you do this to your own daughter?” I asked, my voice cracking.
She answered with horrifying calm.
“I gave a formal statement to Chad’s legal team confirming you were involved in off-the-books operations. I validated the stories about cash payments and fake vendors, and in return, Chad promised me this townhouse and a generous monthly allowance.”
My own mother had actively helped build the trap intended to send me to prison for ten years.
But in their rush, they had made one critical mistake.
The fraudulent power of attorney used to sell the townhouse carried a digital notarization timestamp of 11:43 a.m. the previous day.
At that exact moment, I had been sitting inside a federal courtroom without access to a phone or computer, while my identification documents remained in court custody.
Christopher’s legal team quickly located the notary public involved.
When the district attorney confronted him with the official court log, he broke down and admitted Chad had bribed and threatened him into validating irregular documents.
Then another, darker layer surfaced.
Chad had formally filed for sole custody of Toby, using my criminal conviction and newly revealed connection to Christopher as proof that I was an unfit parent.
While reviewing his filings, our lawyers uncovered Chad’s complete medical history.
It showed he had suffered from absolute male infertility years before our wedding.
I stared at the report in shock.
Toby was six years old.
And I had never been unfaithful to my husband once.
Our legal team subpoenaed records from the fertility clinic where Chad and I had undergone treatment years earlier.
I clearly remembered him telling me the doctors had used his frozen genetic material.
That had been another lie.
The clinic had used an anonymous donor.
And the altered consent form carried the signature of a second witness I recognized immediately.
Lorraine Miller.
Chad had known from the beginning that Toby was not his biological son.
Yet for six years, he had played the loving father while quietly preparing legal weapons to use the child against me if our marriage ever collapsed.
Christopher closed the folder with a heavy thud and said, “Your mother did not start selling you out this week, Genevieve.”
The next afternoon, Chad attended a high-profile real-estate investor summit in Scottsdale, hoping to secure financing for his new venture.
I walked into the main hall accompanied by my father’s legal team.
The moment Chad saw me near the stage, all color vanished from his face.
“What on earth are you doing here?” he stammered. “You were handcuffed yesterday.”
“I am just here to correct a few accounting errors,” I replied loudly.
In front of wealthy investors and bank executives, I explained that the prime commercial property Chad was offering as collateral was under criminal investigation for deed forgery.
One executive immediately stepped away from him and withdrew his offer.
Chad cornered me in a private side hallway, fury widening his eyes.
“You are going to ruin everything I built!”
“You already ruined everything yourself,” I shot back.
Chad pulled out his smartphone and sneered, saying, “I still have something that will utterly destroy your father.”
He played an old audio recording.
Christopher’s voice came through clearly, saying, “Make him disappear. I do not want to see him anywhere near this city tomorrow.”
The man Christopher referred to was a former partner named Wayne Montgomery, who had died only days later in a suspicious violent car crash.
Chad smiled wickedly and said, “Your mother kept that secret recording hidden for over twenty years. If you do not execute a full release of all inheritance claims from Christopher, this recording goes to the prosecutor and the news networks tonight.”
I returned to my father’s estate with trembling hands.
Late that night, an unexpected visitor arrived at the gates.
Brenda.
My husband’s young mistress.
She entered the study and said, “Chad has no idea who I actually am.”
Then she placed an old photograph on the desk.
It showed a younger Brenda standing beside Wayne Montgomery.
“Wayne was my older brother,” she revealed quietly.
I realized then that Brenda had not entered our lives by chance either.
And as she began explaining, it became clear that none of us had understood the full picture.
PART 3
Brenda sat across from me inside the quiet library of my father’s home.
The arrogant smirk she had worn at the courthouse was gone.
“I was only eleven years old when Wayne died,” Brenda explained. “He was like a father to me, and my mother spent her whole life insisting that Christopher Lindqvist had him killed.”
She glared bitterly at my father.
Christopher remained near the window and answered calmly.
“I did have a heated disagreement with your brother, Brenda. He was using shell companies to extort our business partners, and when I said ‘make him disappear,’ I was telling my legal team to sever his contracts and remove him from our local projects. I never ordered anyone’s murder.”
“That is a very convenient story,” Brenda snapped.
“That is why you were given an edited recording instead of the full conversation,” Christopher replied.
Brenda had spent years searching for evidence against my father.
When she discovered Chad was married to Christopher’s secret daughter and learned my mother had worked as Christopher’s administrative assistant decades earlier, she targeted Chad.
Chad thought he had attracted an ambitious young lover.
In reality, Brenda was searching his home for hidden corporate files.
She encouraged Chad to go through Lorraine’s old storage boxes.
That was where they found the audio tape.
Blinded by greed, Chad decided to use it to blackmail my father for millions.
“I wanted to bring Christopher down,” Brenda admitted quietly. “I had no idea Chad was secretly framing you for corporate fraud, and by the time I realized what he was doing to you, I was trapped in his web.”
