“You were going to move my life without telling me.”
“No.”
“You were going to spend my money, leave my job, leave our house, and go meet a child you hid from me for nine years.”
“I wasn’t leaving you.”
“Then what was I supposed to do?”
“You could come.”
I looked at him.
“Come?”
“Yes.”
“To Charlotte?”
“Yes.”
“With your secret daughter and her mother?”
“Stephanie wouldn’t be living with us.”
“But she would be in the same city.”
“Yes.”
“And you would see your daughter.”
“Yes.”
“How often?”
“I don’t know.”
“Would she know about me?”
He hesitated.
“Eventually.”
“Eventually.”
I nodded.
“Would she know that her father was married?”
“Yes.”

“She already knows.”
I laughed softly.
“Everyone knows except me.”
“That’s not true.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“Stephanie didn’t know you didn’t know.”
I stared at him.
“She thought you knew?”
He nodded.
“She thought I knew you had a child?”
“Yes.”
“And she thought I knew you were giving her money?”
“No.”
“Then what did she think I knew?”
He looked terrified.

I felt the room go silent again.
“How?”

“Last year.”
“Why?”

“And you told her?”

He hesitated.

I picked up the bank printout.
“I’m going to bed.”

I walked toward the stairs.

And after three years of lies, I knew better than to accept anyone’s story simply because it sounded convincing.
So I typed one question.

The typing bubble appeared almost immediately.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.

I can’t explain it over text.
I stared at the screen.

I almost laughed.

The day after Christmas.
My husband had spent Christmas dinner publicly giving away my money while privately planning a future with another woman and a child he had never told me about.
And now that woman wanted to meet me.

A coffee shop twenty minutes from my house.

I looked across the bedroom.

I looked at him.

“Josie?”

“Stephanie.”
She looked at me for several seconds.

“I’m sorry.”
I sat down.
“For what?”
“For the money.”
I didn’t respond.
She sat opposite me.
“I never knew he was taking it from your personal account.”
“You just told me he told you.”
“He did.”
“Then you knew.”
“I knew he said you knew.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“I understand that now.”
I leaned back.
“Start at the beginning.”
She took a breath.
“Cal and I dated when we were twenty-eight.”
“I know.”
“He broke up with me.”
“Because of the pregnancy?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I found out I was pregnant after we broke up.”
I waited.
“I told him.”
“What did he say?”
“He wanted me to terminate the pregnancy.”
My jaw tightened.
“He didn’t want a child.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He said he wasn’t ready.”
“And you?”
“I didn’t want to.”
“So you had Emma.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you put Cal’s name on the birth certificate?”
She looked down.
“Because he wouldn’t sign it.”
I stared at her.
“He refused?”
“He said he couldn’t be a father.”
“And then?”
“For the first two years, he disappeared.”
I felt something twist inside me.
“Then he came back?”
“Yes.”

I almost smiled bitterly.
“My husband found his own daughter through Facebook.”
Stephanie nodded.
“He called me.”
“What did he say?”
“He asked if he could meet her.”
“Did you let him?”
“Eventually.”
I sat quietly.
“So he has seen her.”
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
She hesitated.
“More than you think.”
I closed my eyes.

“At least thirty.”

“Where?”
“Mostly restaurants. Parks. Her school events.”

“Now she does.”
I opened my eyes.
“When did she find out?”
“About six months ago.”
“How?”
“She overheard us arguing.”
