At My Mother’s Funeral, I Heard My Husband Whisper About a 27-Year Secret—So I Dug Beneath Her Red Maple

“I didn’t want you asking why,” he said.
“You were afraid I’d learn about Clare.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

“I have been afraid for twenty-seven years that you would find out.”

“Because you thought I’d believe you might hurt me?”

“Yes.”

Then he said something I did not expect.

“And you would be right to wonder.”

He did not excuse himself.

He did not tell me Clare had exaggerated.

He did not blame alcohol.

He simply said:

“I did something terrible.”

Then he added:

“I haven’t done anything like it since.”

I asked him whether that was because he had changed or because my mother had held the truth over him.
