“Why would you help someone take my son?”
Mom wiped her eyes.
“Monica was falling apart. Her marriage was ending. She had debt. People were asking questions about Owen. She said if everyone focused on you, they would stop treating her like a failure.”
I stared at her.
“You used Eli as a distraction.”
“I thought he’d stay with Monica for a few weeks. I thought you’d learn to make more room for family.”
