My Ex-Wife Had a 7-Year-Old Son With My Eyes—and a Letter I Never Received

I looked at the boy again.

His hair was a little darker than mine had been at his age, and his face was rounder, softer. But those eyes were unmistakable. Blue-gray, with a thin ring of darker color around each iris. My mother used to say she could recognize our family eyes from across a crowded room.

I had inherited them from my father.

Now they were looking back at me from the face of a seven-year-old boy.

“Lauren,” I said, barely recognizing my own voice. “Is he—”

“Ethan,” she interrupted gently, addressing the boy. “Sweetheart, why don’t you go finish putting the star on the tree? I’ll be there in a minute.”
