The family secret letter suggested that there was something important about my childhood that several members of my family had deliberately kept from me.
I stopped reading for a moment.
Suddenly, the old photographs scattered around me seemed different. I started looking at the faces, wondering who knew the truth and how long they had known it.
The letter did not explain everything. Instead, it referred to other letters and documents that had supposedly been kept together.
I searched through the box again.
Beneath the photographs, I discovered several more envelopes.
The More I Read, the More Questions I Had
Each letter revealed another small piece of the story. Some mentioned conversations that had happened when I was too young to remember them. Others described disagreements between relatives and decisions that apparently affected my life.
What surprised me most was not simply that my family had kept a secret. It was how many people seemed to have known about it.
I had always believed I understood my childhood. We celebrated birthdays together, spent holidays around the same table, and told the same familiar family stories year after year.
Now I wondered how much of that story I had never been told.
I continued reading until the sunlight coming through the window began to fade.
By then, the room was covered with photographs, envelopes, and old documents.
I had answers to a few questions, but many more had taken their place.
