I Could No Longer Ignore What I Found
Part of me wanted to put everything back into the wooden box and pretend I had never discovered it. Doing that would have been easier than asking questions that might make people uncomfortable.
But I knew I could not forget what I had read.
The family secret letter had already changed something inside me. Memories that once seemed simple now felt incomplete, and conversations from years earlier suddenly had new meaning.
I carefully organized the photographs and letters before placing them back into the box. However, I kept the first envelope with me.
That evening, I sat at my kitchen table and read it again from beginning to end.
As I continued reading the family secret letter, more questions began to surface.
This time, I paid attention to every sentence.
There was one question I could no longer avoid: Why had my family believed that keeping this truth from me was the right thing to do?
I knew there was only one way to find out.
The next time my family gathered together, I planned to bring the letter with me and finally ask about the secret they had kept hidden for so many years.
Old letters and photographs can become important pieces of family history. The National Archives offers helpful guidance on preserving family papers and photographs for future generations.
