My Husband Said “The Comfort Is Over” and Gave Away Half My Paycheck—Then His Mother Came for Sunday Lunch

PART 3

I was sitting at the kitchen island in my scrubs, eating toast before my shift.

“Canceled?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I took a sip of coffee.

“Because the comfort is over.”

His expression changed.

For a second, I thought he might laugh.

Instead, he said, “You’re being petty.”

“No. I’m being consistent.”

He pulled out a chair.

“Esme, I told you yesterday. Megan needs help.”

“I know.”

“And you agreed.”

“I agreed that the comfort was over.”

“You know what I meant.”

“I know exactly what you meant.”

He stared at me.

“You’re really going to make this difficult?”

I almost smiled.
