I Came Home to Find My Feverish Daughter Crying Outside—Then She Whispered, “Don’t Let Mommy Take Me”

And it showed my wife walking away.

The officer paused the video.

“There’s more.”

I stared at him.

“About eleven minutes.”

Eleven minutes.

I looked at my daughter sleeping beneath the hospital blankets.

Eleven minutes was an eternity for a healthy child.

For a child with a fever and broken ribs, I couldn’t even comprehend it.

My wife’s voice came through the tiny phone speaker.

“You made this mess.”

My daughter was crying.

“I’m sorry, Mommy.”

“Sorry doesn’t clean anything.”

“I’ll clean it.”
