He turned as I entered.

“I assume you’ve reviewed everything.”

“Enough.”

He nodded.

“I failed.”

This time, he didn’t sound defensive.

I sat down.

“Tell me why.”

He lowered himself into the opposite chair.

“The property was struggling when I came in.”

“I know.”

“Turnover was high. Guest scores were unstable. Costs were out of control. Corporate wanted results.”

“Corporate wanted improvement.”

“I know.”

“Not this.”

“I know that now.”

I studied him.

“You knew it before.”

He didn’t disagree.

After a pause, he said, “I rewarded speed. Efficiency. High-value guest retention. Gala accounts. Loyalty members. People who could hurt us publicly.”
