“Ma’am, with that sleeping child and those bruised flowers, you might want to look for a cheaper motel down the road.”

For a moment, I thought I’d misheard him.

Not because his words were confusing.

But because I was standing inside a hotel I owned.

My six-year-old daughter, Lily, slept against my right shoulder, her cheek resting on my worn brown leather jacket. Her arms draped loosely around my neck, one hand clutching the ear of the stuffed rabbit she’d carried everywhere since her father passed away.

In my left hand was a bouquet of red roses.
