Gerald immediately grabbed his son’s arm.

“Gabriel, listen to me.”

Gabriel tore his arm away.

“Don’t touch me.”

His father stopped.

I had never seen Gabriel speak to Gerald that way.

Not once in seven years of marriage.

Gerald had always been the strongest personality in the family. He was the man everyone obeyed at dinner. The man who decided which business deals were acceptable, which relatives were trustworthy, and even when Gabriel should visit his own mother.

But now, for the first time, Gerald looked old.

Not powerful.

Old.

“Dad,” Gabriel said, “who is this man?”
