I stared at him.
“You were outside while I was sleeping inside?”
He nodded.
“Why didn’t you wake me?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t think you’d believe me.”
That hurt more than anything else he had said.
“Why would you think that?”
“Because Dad always says I’m exaggerating.”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
Then I made a decision.
“You’re coming with me tonight.”
Matthew immediately looked nervous.
“What about Dad?”
“We’ll talk to him.”
I wasn’t interested in turning the evening into a confrontation.
I wanted Matthew somewhere warm and calm first.
We walked toward the house together.
I knocked firmly.
After a moment, Alex opened the door.
His expression changed when he saw us.
“Dad?”
Then he saw Matthew wearing my coat.
“What happened?”
I looked at him.
“That’s what I’m trying to understand.”
Veronica appeared behind him.
“He was given a consequence.”
I glanced toward the dining room.
The food looked fine.
“What exactly did he do?”
“He wasn’t paying attention.”
Veronica crossed her arms.
“This is my home, Ernest. I expect the rules to be followed.”
“I understand having rules.”
I kept my voice controlled.
“But Matthew is upset, and I’m concerned about what he’s telling me.”
Alex immediately looked uncomfortable.
“Dad, can we talk about this later?”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“We’ve been talking about this later for months.”
The room became quiet.
Matthew stepped inside long enough to collect a backpack and several belongings.
Alex followed him upstairs.
“Matthew, wait.”
Matthew continued packing.
“I can talk to Veronica.”
My grandson looked at him.
“You’ve said that before.”
Alex stopped.
“You were there last week when I wasn’t allowed to sit with everyone at dinner.”
He looked at his father.
“You didn’t say anything.”
Alex had no answer.
Downstairs, Veronica was already speaking on the phone.
“If Ernest takes him without permission, I’m calling the police.”
I nodded.
“That’s okay.”
She stared at me.
“We can let them help us sort this out.”
That seemed to surprise her.
Matthew came downstairs carrying his backpack.
Before leaving, he looked at Alex.
“I love you, Dad.”
Alex’s face tightened.
“But I don’t feel safe talking about anything here anymore.”
That was all he said.
Then he came home with me.
An hour later, Matthew was sitting at my kitchen table.
The house was warm.
A bowl of stew sat in front of him.
For the first time that evening, his shoulders had started to relax.
Then someone knocked.
Two police officers were outside.
Alex and Veronica stood a few steps behind them.
Veronica spoke immediately.
“I want him returned.”
The lead officer looked at Matthew.
Then at me.
“Before we decide anything, I’d like to speak with him privately.”
I agreed.
One officer sat across from Matthew in the kitchen.
His voice was calm.
“Do you want to be here?”
“Yes.”
“Did your grandfather force you to come?”
“No.”
“Did he make you leave the house?”
Matthew shook his head.
“I wanted to leave with him.”
The officer nodded.
“Tell me what happened tonight.”
Matthew explained.
The turkey.
The argument.
Being told to go outside.
His father being present.
Then he carefully described several other incidents that had made him feel isolated or afraid to speak up.
The officer listened without interrupting.
When Matthew finished, the officer turned toward Alex.
“Mr. Ramirez, I need you to answer honestly.”
Alex looked exhausted.
“Was Matthew told to stay outside tonight?”
“Yes.”
Veronica stared at him.
“Alex.”
He didn’t look at her.
“And were you there?”
“Yes.”
“Did you intervene?”
Alex closed his eyes.
“No.”
The officer paused.
“Has Matthew raised concerns before?”
Another silence.
Then Alex said,
“Yes.”
That single word changed the room.
Veronica stepped back.
Alex rubbed his face.
“He told me he felt like the rules were unfair.”
