My Husband Had Been Dead 16 Days When His Hospice Nurse Asked, “Do You Know a Woman Named Lillian?”

“And Walter helped her.”

“He promised my grandfather before he died that he would protect us.”

“Us?”

“My mother and me.”

I sat back.

“Then why did Walter marry me?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because he believed marrying you would protect you from his family’s problems.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It didn’t work.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“It didn’t.”

Daniel sat across from me.

“My father thought if he kept the legal mess away from you, you could have a normal life.”

I whispered, “But he lied.”

“Yes.”

“Over and over.”

“Yes.”

I looked toward the hallway.

“Did he ever regret it?”
