“We already sold our home based on what Ethan promised.”
I looked at Ethan.
“He had nothing to promise.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“We were told this house would remain in the family.”
“It will remain with whoever buys it.”
Madison slammed her hand against the table.
“Stop saying that!”
I turned to her.
“Why?”
“Because you know what you’re doing!”
“Yes.”
That surprised her.
“I’m selling my property.”
Her mother started crying.
“You would choose money over family?”
“No.”
I folded my hands.
“I’m choosing ownership over occupation.”
Claire looked around.
“So where are we supposed to go?”
I almost admired how naturally they asked.
Six adults had organized their housing around a widow they never consulted.
Then blamed the widow.
Helen arrived five minutes later.
Madison stared at her.
“Who is this?”

Helen placed copies of the trust, title, sale contract, and vacancy notices on the dining table.
Richard read the first page.

“Ethan isn’t on the deed?”
“No,” Helen said.
Madison turned on my son.
“You told us this was basically your inheritance.”
Ethan whispered, “It will be eventually.”
I answered.
“Not necessarily.”
Everyone looked at me.

His expression collapsed.

“No.”
I looked at the people who had already assigned my bedroom to someone else.
“Revenge would be making you feel what I felt when I saw my name written beside ‘small temporary bedroom’ in the house I paid for.”
He went pale.
Madison looked at him.
“What is she talking about?”
I handed her the printed floor plan.
She recognized it immediately.
